Our Sabbath RestBy Daniel D. Goehring copyright © 2002
A Study of the New Covenant Teachings regarding the Sabbath.
Scripture passages are taken from the New American Standard Bible.
Let us start by looking at a response of the Lord Jesus Christ to accusations from the Pharisees relating to the issue of the Sabbath.
The Lord of the Sabbath is Greater than the Temple. 1 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples became hungry and began to pick the heads of grain and eat. 2 But when the Pharisees saw this, they said to Him, "Look, Your disciples do what is not lawful to do on a Sabbath." 3 But He said to them, "Have you not read what David did when he became hungry, he and his companions, 4 how he entered the house of God, and they ate the consecrated bread, which was not lawful for him to eat nor for those with him, but for the priests alone? 5 "Or have you not read in the Law, that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple break the Sabbath and are innocent? 6 "But I say to you that something greater than the temple is here. 7 "But if you had known what this means , 'I DESIRE COMPASSION, AND NOT A SACRIFICE,' you would not have condemned the innocent. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."
Principles: The focus of the Sabbath was the temple. It was the place:
All that occured in/at the temple under the Old Covenant, occurs, or has occured, in and through Jesus Christ. From the believer's perspective after His sacrifice and resurrection, many of these already occured once and for all (see the book of Hebrews, especially chapters 7-10). Here Jesus states that He is greater than the temple where all that the Sabbath was about took place. He is the Messiah, the Lamb of God, the King of Kings - He is the Lord of the Sabbath. What specifically took place on or during the regular weekly Sabbath was
The Purpose of the Sabbath 23 And it happened that He was passing through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples began to make their way along while picking the heads of grain. 24 The Pharisees were saying to Him, "Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?" 25 And He said* to them, "Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions became hungry; 26 how he entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the consecrated bread, which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests, and he also gave it to those who were with him?" 27 Jesus said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. 28 "So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."
Principles: Here the Lord of the Sabbath states that the Sabbath was established for man, to benefit him, not harm him. To the traditionalist the question is, "What is more important, the tradition of this day or the man, for whom it was established?" The view of the Master was clearly stated.
1 He entered again into a synagogue; and a man was there whose hand was withered. 2 They were watching Him to see if He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him. 3 He said* to the man with the withered hand, "Get up and come forward!" 4 And He said* to them, "Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to kill?" But they kept silent. 5 After looking around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, He said* to the man, "Stretch out your hand." And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored. 6 The Pharisees went out and immediately began conspiring with the Herodians against Him, as to how they might destroy Him.
See also the parallel passage of these past references in Luke 6:1-11 .
14 And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about Him spread through all the surrounding district. 15 And He began teaching in their synagogues and was praised by all.
10 And He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11 And there was a woman who for eighteen years had had a sickness caused by a spirit; and she was bent double, and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, He called her over and said to her, "Woman, you are freed from your sickness." 13 And He laid His hands on her; and immediately she was made erect again and began glorifying God. 14 But the synagogue official, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, began saying to the crowd in response, "There are six days in which work should be done; so come during them and get healed, and not on the Sabbath day." 15 But the Lord answered him and said, "You hypocrites, does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead him away to water him? 16 "And this woman, a daughter of Abraham as she is, whom Satan has bound for eighteen long years, should she not have been released from this bond on the Sabbath day?" 17 As He said this, all His opponents were being humiliated; and the entire crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things being done by Him.
The Second work of God 2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda , having five porticoes. 3 In these lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, and withered, [waiting for the moving of the waters; 4 for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was made well from whatever disease with which he was afflicted.] 5 A man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been a long time in that condition, He said* to him, "Do you wish to get well?" 7 The sick man answered Him, "Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me." 8 Jesus said* to him, "Get up, pick up your pallet and walk." 9 Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk. Jesus' Equality with God 18 For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.
Principles: The first sabbath was when God ceased His work of creation. God did not NEED to cease, or rest at that time. He ceased because the task was accomplished - the work was done. The law of the Sabbath established in the 10 Commandments was established for man to have a rhythm of rest, patterned after God's rest. The nation of Israel had numerous other sabbaths beyond the weekly one. Here in this passage we find the Messiah Jesus stating that His Father and He are working. What was this work? The work of redemption for a people He would save out of the world. The mission of providing the way of salvation. When the work of redemption was done, what did Jesus say?
28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said* , "I am thirsty." 29 A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. 30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
After His resurrection, the Messiah sat on His throne at the right hand of the Father with all authority in heaven and on earth given to Him and now has commissioned a work for His disciples - to go throughout the world and make disciples of Christ (Matthew 28:16-20, Acts 1:6-8).
Entering the Sabbath Rest for Our Souls 5 Now Moses was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken later; 6 but Christ was faithful as a Son over His house—whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end. The Peril of Unbelief 12 Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called "Today," so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end, 15 while it is said,
The Believer's Rest 1 Therefore, let us fear if, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have come short of it. 2 For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also; but the word they heard did not profit them, because it was not united by faith in those who heard. 3 For we who have believed enter that rest, just as He has said,
Principles: When Israel entered the promised land under the leadership of Moses and then Joshua they did not attain the Sabbath rest God promised. First, the promised land was not where they would find rest, but in God Himself. They continually refused to obey Him and this disobedience was the evidence that they refused to believe / trust Him. Second, the promised Sabbath rest would come through faith in God, specifically through faith in the coming promised Redeemer, the Seed of Abraham, the Christ (Messiah) Who has accomplished the work of Salvation, in which we can rest.
20 Then He began to denounce the cities in which most of His miracles were done, because they did not repent. 25 At that time Jesus said, "I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. 26 "Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight. 27 "All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.
Principles of Conscience 1 Now
accept the one who is weak in faith, but not for the purpose of passing judgment on his opinions. 2 One person has faith that he may eat all things, but he who is weak eats vegetables only. 3 The
one who eats is not to regard with contempt the one who does not eat, and the one who does not eat is not to judge the one who eats, for God has accepted him. 4 Who
are you to judge the servant of another? To his own master he stands or
falls; and he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand. "AS I LIVE, SAYS THE LORD, EVERY KNEE SHALL BOW TO ME,
Traditions versus ChristColossians 2:23 1 For
I want you to know how great a struggle I have on your behalf and for those
who are at Laodicea, and for all those who have not personally seen my face, 2 that
their hearts may be encouraged, having been knit together in love, and attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God's mystery, that is, Christ Himself, 3 in
whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. 4 I
say this so that no one will delude you with persuasive argument. 5 For
even though I am absent in body, nevertheless I am with you in spirit, rejoicing
to see your good discipline and the stability of your faith in Christ.
In Conclusion we should understand that every day we live is holy before God and that Christ is our everlasting Sabbath rest in whom we rest our trust completely and find our peace. Every day we who belong to Christ live in the Sabbath of the saving work that Christ has finished, once and for all time. . |
